The origins of the Royal Marine Bands in the Portsmouth area can be traced back to the 18th century. However, today's band is a direct descendant of the Band of the Royal Marine Artillery, which was formed in January 1861. Four years after it was founded, this band consisted of 46 musicians and 8 band boys. The band, based in the barracks of the Royal Marines Artillery in Eastney, Portsmouth, was under the direction of conductor John Winterbottom.

The military orchestra has always served the royal family and for years 26 musicians were on the royal yacht Britannia when the royal family was on board. The Band of HM Royal Marines has around 500 appearances each year in a large formation of three different military associations or as a small orchestra on board the HMS Victory or other senior officers of the Royal Navy.

She also gives numerous concerts and provides the Royal Marines School of Music with orchestras and bands for practice purposes for band masters in training. The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines has recorded brass orchestra music on numerous sound carriers at Obrasso Verlag.
